Celebrating smart design
We attended the grand opening June 22 of the Bagley Classroom here in Duluth, where our reclaimed Douglas fir timbers feature prominently in what is hoped to be University of Minnesota-Duluth's first LEED platinum building. The high-tech, understated design is by David Salmela of Salmela Architect, with project architect Carly Coulson.
Situated beside 55 wild acres, the 2,000 sq. ft., $1 million building is super insulated, solar heated and made with lots of recycled material. For benches outside, Duluth Timber also provided chunks of special reclaimed Alaskan yellow cedar. Ooo-la-la.

Completed in 2000, this 84-room luxury hotel and spa continues to receive high marks for its interiors. Willows Lodge developer, Phil Sherburne, says the reclaimed wood just gets better over time.
