Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
We had the unexpected pleasure of being involved in what turned out to be an inspiring project, an 'extreme home makeover'. This is the weekly ABC-TV show that selects a deserving family and--using all volunteer crews and donated materials--razes their old home and raises a new one in its place, all within one week. The family's whisked off on vacation, while crews work round the clock, applyin sg the final spit and polish before the surprise 'reveal.' What's special about the Huber Family project (Episode 1 of Season 7, aired Sunday, Sept. 27) is its concerted effort to use green design elements, materials and building practices. The project, managed by Builders Commonwealth, included deconstructing for salvage instead of the landfill, a not-so-big footprint, alternative energy (a "Triple E" building), as well as reclaimed wood. The crowds and crews were fed and watered with conscientious attention to minimizing waste, and the community effort extended to a food drive as well. Love Letter From: Peggy Bosche Brandin, I got so excited after receiving my beams last week I neglected to send the 'thank you' and 'I love them' note I'd promised. I loved that you gave me some nails, a great mix of wood, the 8X8s I was so crazy for, and a wonderful main beam, made all the more interesting with the paint on it which I lacked the foresight to request. It's almost like you really know what you're doing, no?! All kidding aside, I AM grateful. These beams are the centerpiece of the studio and far better than I'd imagined. Thank you. Best,
