Wooden superstructure of Longbell Mill, prior to deconstruction
Chapter 3:
It is from these structures--the factories of the last century, our "industrial forest"--that we reclaim the bulk of our wood. So, when you receive your first delivery from Duluth Timber, it's the old bolt and nail holes from the wood’s past life that you see in our product. Because it is old-growth, the reclaimed wood has the finest grain structure of all North American softwoods. And since the wood has stood for decades, it is dry and stable.
Our customers celebrate the wood's history in different ways. "Resawn" wood is surfaced on four sides to bring out its clean grain and to show off any stains and character defects. Left "As Is," previously unpainted wood carries the dark patina of exposure and age. For others, we heighten the sense of rustic age through texturing.
